OSX IS giving it’s users all the flexibility it can give; Use Time Machine for a full backup with revisioning, or use rSync (shipped with it) for the more complex tasks. Compared to windows; no backup software to speak of, no revisioning, no rsync. On a Mac, there is NO reason whatsoever to not backing up your harddisk. Mar 28, 2019 Step 1, Connect your Mac to a formatted external hard drive. Connect the drive to your computer using the cable provided (usually USB, Lightning or eSATA).Step 2, Click on the Apple menu. It's the icon in the upper-left corner of your screen.Step 3, Click on System Preferences. It's in the second section of the drop-down menu. You can also use mlbackup to achieve the same by creating a simple 7 line (max.) config file and have delta copies, backup rotation, growl and email notifications. Mlbackup was also featured in another hint and is available for free, licensed under GPL.

I would go with
rsync as it only copies files changed since the last time you ran it, making it quicker on second and subsequent backups.
Assuming your username is Mark Setchell
Freddy Frog and your external HDD is called My External Drive , you could do this:
